This particular field does require that the student have a substantial background in algebra. Calibration of these gauges is taught for this specialized area of expertise. It is vital that one have an understanding of what factors should be considered in the pressure readings and their accuracy. As with taking a blood pressure, remaining still and quiet will lead to a much more accurate reading.
