As many as 70% of the asthmatic sufferers also suffer from acid reflux disease. The exact cause of asthma and acid reflux is unknown though there are many theories why this is. The most interesting theory is that there are significant changes in the pressure of the chest during breathing. The asthmatic person’s high chest pressures may actually force the acid from the stomach into the esophagus, resulting in the painful symptoms of acid reflux disease. When the acid from the stomach is regurgitated, the lungs become irritated and this further aggravates the symptoms of asthma. Obviously asthma and acid reflux, in this case, seem to go hand in hand.
